GO!
Hello from THE PASS as they say in English here (nobody says that) where I have returned from traveling to get into the Nitty, Gritty, and all things of the creative endeavor. In other words, WORK.
It’s cooling off more and more, winter is coming… ON OUR FACES. We are thinking about planting some wildflowers beforehand, but like everything, it’s about when, where, and how, so we get scared. So I may say fuck it and throw a BUNCH of seeds everywhere and let nature takes its course because it’s better to do wrong than to do nothing. Of course, there might be BEES to the face for that.
By the time you read this, we might be in the 40s or so, so it's time to grip them, huevos kids.
COMICS
The Kickstarter is going well, though we are in that horrible mid-campaign slowdown. It happens, and as much as I can bang a gong on the internet, it’s all about getting the right people. I know I’m not for everyone. FOR SURE. But for those that I can tickle their pickle, hell come on in. It’s not about getting everyone on board, but the right people.
So we have been steady at 62% for a bit now, and I've been in touch with lots of folks to get the word out. Here is another review/article on FWACATA #1 right here:
This week has been hard, to say the least as I work my day job and finish freelance, it was hard to get back to screaming like a madman about my Kickstarter project but I have found TWITTER better now known as X, actually responsive and helpful, of all things! I guess even a dumpster fire can keep you warm!
I've been getting some of the last copies in people's hands too, and I hope to have some more great words for it soon!
That being said, there is some cool shit coming out there:
The Good, The Bad, and The Prehistoric - Issues 1 & 2
A friend and consort in comics is Martin Pierro and his company company COSMIC TIMES has been at it strong for 12 years now ( I think more) and it’s awesome to see him still at it, this time with a really cool book called “The Good, The Bad, and The Prehistoric” an exciting story about the old west ... but not as you know it.
The Good, The Bad, and The Prehistoric is a 3-issue mini-series created by Martin Pierro & Zach Bassett! The first TWO issues make up 47 pages of exciting all-ages full-color fun!
TART
Kevin Joseph has also been a friend and ally in the fight to make good comics, and he’s back with his book TART, a fantasy comic book series following a group of time-traveling demon hunters who use their witchlike powers to stand against the forces of Hell.
I say this in all honesty, or said it really the other day on Twitter:
I mean between webcomics, indie books, zines, mini-comics, IG comics, and so much more, I have so much to read, how are people bored with comics? Or can’t find what to read? I think you’re not looking hard enough and not enough comic “Journalism” is happening to evangelize it more! OR TELLS YOU HOW POORLY IT’S DOING. It’s too good now!
ALSO THIS WEEK:
VIGIL
Still pumping through one of the longer crazier stories I did for the series, it's fun to see it up again!
ZOMBIE YEARS
SEX SCENE! Yep, but believe me I think this is when I really was hitting my stride wit the series! Looking back I'm pretty damn proud. Check it out
NEENJAZ
This has been fun and when I get back to it I have fun and I hope you read that while I do it.
So busy as always. The comic book mistress waits for no one! Some behind-the-scenes stuff should be coming soon for Patrons.
ART
Lots of illustration work this week, some of it the usual, cool comic book shit, but on occasion, you get something like a Pet portrait. Now there are many an artist who believe this is beneath them to do but to me, it’s almost a better challenge and opportunity than a portrait of a person.
I was asked by a client for a companion piece to an earlier work I had sold to them before the move in May to El Paso. At first, I was kind of hesitant because it was an extra one off of an already-made series that is in Norway somewhere I sold through a gallery back in 2011 or so. But when I thought about it I did have something else to say about it, as it is a Meditation on PARADISE LOST by John Milton. I’m messing with some ideas and approaches, like this:
“What is dark within me, illumine.” ― John Milton, Paradise Lost
So there is that in the works.

AND OTHER STRANGENESS
Been reading a bit more, especially a toy job, since I have downtime here and there and not enough to draw or make comics so might as well feed the brain. Lately been looking at different antics to use in art, storytelling techniques, and ideas, and Warren put some cool shit up the other day.
In studying many things, there are some things I adhere to. I sometimes want to know the inner workings of a profession how they go about that, and what the history of that is. In that, I have a swollen inbox of emails and packed folders of articles I’ve read or not read or need to re-read about it. However, I did read this recent article by The Smithsonian on Zelia Nutall, an American archaeologist and anthropologist who specialized in pre-Aztec Mexican cultures and pre-Columbian manuscripts. She discovered two forgotten manuscripts of this type in private collections, one of them being the Codex Zouche-Nuttall. She was one of the first to identify and recognize artifacts dating back to the pre-Aztec period. She had an amazing life and process, and struggled and did, in Man’s world, and accomplished much. It’s a great article and a good read.
I wanted to make an Indian Jones character, female, but not some sex bomb idiotic thing, for SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DEMONS, to help Agent THIK along the way and thought of this as a good source.
It’s Friday as I write this, and I am tired, but in a good way. That is what you should go for, that when you are finally done for the day and your head hits that pillow you can smile and know you attacked the fuck out of everything on your list, and that tomorrow you do the same!
